Mark Rutte highlights significance of backing Kyiv in 12-minute video message marking his departure after nearly 14 years as prime minister

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte urged his country to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia in a farewell address Sunday before leaving office to become NATO’s new secretary general.

In a 12-minute video message marking his departure after nearly 14 years as prime minister, Rutte highlighted the significance of backing Ukraine.

He described the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 on July 17, 2014 allegedly by Russian-backed separatists in which all 298 people on board were killed as one of “the most drastic and emotional events.”

Rutte underscored that peace in Ukraine is crucial for Dutch security and reiterated the importance of being integrated into the European Union and NATO.

He called for sustained support for Ukraine, stressing that unity and collaboration with international partners are vital in facing global challenges.

Rutte will assume his functions as NATO secretary general from Oct. 1 this year, replacing Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg, who is stepping down after a decade in the post.
